
Our story
Matter Forms is a London-based interdisciplinary design studio founded by Mooka Srisurayotin in 2023. Taking a material-led approach to architectural design, the studio works at the intersection of material innovation, craft and circular thinking, creating spatial elements, surfaces and objects that shape atmosphere, identity and experience.
The studio emerged through research into how local waste streams can become valuable resources for architecture and spatial design. This led to the development of Oyster[Crete]®, a bio-alternative stone material made primarily from reclaimed oyster shells collected from London restaurants and seafood suppliers, exploring more circular, locally rooted approaches to material production while building awareness around waste, traceability and regional supply networks.
Each application is developed in response to its spatial context, with textures, finishes and forms shaped through low-energy casting and careful hand-finishing in East London. Drawing inspiration from natural erosion, mineral formations and sedimentation, the work creates tactile surfaces that invite sensory engagement beyond the purely visual.
Circularity is embedded throughout. Oyster[Crete]® incorporates high levels of reclaimed material, including oyster shells and recycled glass, while offcuts are reintegrated into future batches, reusable mould systems minimise waste, and at end of life the material can be crushed, repurposed as aggregate or returned to natural systems.
Matter Forms has been recognised through programmes supporting innovation and circular design, including the Innovate UK Unlocking Potential Award. Supported by UCL Innovation & Enterprise, Hackney Wick & Fish Island Community Development Trust and the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park Innovation District, the studio launched its first micro-manufacturing pilot at The Loop — East London's first circular economy hub dedicated to sustainable production and material innovation.

Our Approach
We begin with material — understanding its origin, composition and potential to shape spatial experience, atmosphere and form.
We work with waste streams and regenerative resources, developing closed-loop approaches that reconsider how materials are sourced, used and re-used within the built environment.
We combine experimentation with hands-on making, balancing technical development with refined detailing to create work that is both expressive and enduring.
